Circularity & Community Building Specialist

Emily Coyne has been transforming discarded materials into jewelry since her teens, sparking a lifelong fascination with the creative potential hidden in what others throw away. This early exploration of found materials launched her creative journey and instilled a deep curiosity about how things are made and discarded.

Throughout her career in program management and education, she became increasingly aware and troubled by society’s wasteful practices, leading her toward a community-focused approach to sustainability. In 2016, she embraced a zero waste lifestyle, drawn to the intentionality of living her values. The pandemic crystallized her sense of urgency—it felt like a now-or-never moment to channel all her energy into creating a less wasteful, more circular future.

With nearly two decades of experience working with found materials (since 2005), Emily Coyne has spent the last six years integrating sustainability into her personal life and the past two years bringing this passion to her professional work.

Her practice centers on the intersection of reverse engineering, creative problem solving, and material literacy—helping others overcome the paralysis of the blank page to discover what's possible with discarded resources.

Emily Coyne holds TRUE Certification and a Master Compost Certificate, bringing both technical expertise and grassroots wisdom to her sustainability work.

Circularity In Action

Community Repair Events

Hosted by Clean Bushwick Initiative, a Brooklyn based community environmental group, Emily co-organizes repair programs. These events invite the community to bring their beloved but broken items for repair by volunteer repair coaches. Emily had led volunteer recruitment and onsite venue logistics for 4+ events since 2024.

Composting

In 2023 Emily earned a Master Composter certificate from the NYC Compost Project. She’s been a dedicated compost volunteer lead at Sunset Garden in Ridgewood, Queens, helping the team process a ton of food scraps in it’s first year.

Waste Audits & Reporting

Endlessly curious about the materials we discard, Emily has dove head first into the world of waste. She’s conducted countless waste audits for commercial offices, manufacturing clients, and cultural institutions. In this work, Emily blends her material experience as an artist with analytical skills transforming discarded materials into data points to drive programmatic change.
